Walking Out Ceremony
June 10, 2023. The Cree people invited the Mohawks of Kahnawake to participate in the Cree Walking-Out Ceremony at the Mohawk/Cree Teepee area on the towerline road on the 207.
It is customary for small Cree children to be carried when they go outdoors until they are initiated through the Walking-Out Ceremony. The springtime ceremony provides an occasion for the first time a child walks on his or her own (or with a little adult help) outside, signifying movement toward adulthood and greater responsibility. The toddlers' families and friends assemble in a special tent or Teepee. The children are dressed in traditional clothing and, in some places, are given toy tools and utensils, representing the real tools and utensils they eventually will use.
For the walking out, each child walks through the doorway and proceeds about 20 feet to a tree, circles the tree, then returns to the tent, where a huge fuss is made over each child's new accomplishment. After all the toddlers have completed the walk, everyone is given a morsel of delicious meat, and a piece of taffy.
Later in the day they held a wonderful feast!

Memorial Day Service
On Memorial Sunday, May 28, 2023, the people of Kahnawake United Church held a special remembrance of all the Veterans of Kahnawake, remembering also family members and friends. Many brought photographs of their loved ones. It was meaningful for us to hear the names spoken and for family members to be able to light candles in their loved ones' memories.
We hope to make this an annual event.
Pastor Jan also had the privilege of replacing US flags on some of the graves in the Catholic cemetery.
